WingTips Special Issue
Bird breeders and keepers in Florida have been hit hard by a string of disasters including Hurricanes Charley and Frances, with more storms on the way. Some disaster relief efforts have been set up, and BirdHobbyist.com would like to invite its users to consider helping their fellow hobbyists in this time of need. According to the American Federation of Aviculture, "During Hurricane Andrew, the (AFA) established a Disaster Relief Fund to assist aviculturists who have been affected by natural events such as hurricanes, wild fires, earthquakes, etc." BirdHobbyist.com is a member of the AFA, and we encourage you to give them your support. The Organization of Professional Aviculturists, Inc., has established a fund for the relief of a stricken Florida breeder, Howard Voren. According to OPA, "Almost every tree on the property, including a canopy of jacaranda trees Howard planted 20 years ago, have been uprooted and they have fallen on top of cages. Hundreds of birds are still trapped in damaged cages. Virtually everything has been crushed and is standing in muck." For more information and to donate to these groups, visit the BirdHobbyist.com disaster relief page.
