PH Budgie
One of the most exciting events we've ever had in our community is the upcoming Chat Week, from December 8-14. My pets are always an active part of the holidays. Today, I have a "single budgie," but that was not always the case. Back in 1988, we had three budgies: Beaker, Pixie, and Sam. Beaker was the "kingpin." He was our most active, and Sam and Pixie especially often mimicked his behavior. We let them out to fly together, and they were truly the Three Musketeers. Beaker would navigate, he would do his thing, finding places in the room, and Sam and Pixie would follow. It was no exception, then, Thanksgiving was their special night out. Our family was in watching the annual Thanksgiving night movie and my Mom had some phone calls to make. Therefore, she decided to have a turkey sandwich for a snack. She came into the living room with the sandwich. I must admit, the sandwich looked great - it was on the soft, freshest bread. There were fresh lettuce and tomatoes spilling out the sides, and plenty of mayonnaise. It was what holiday leftovers were all about. Beaker, Pixie, and Sam were doing their own thing. They liked to perch near our front window, so they weren't initially paying attention. As soon as my Mom sat down in the chair (which was on the other side of the room), Beaker flew over. He didn't opt for the curtains above the chair. Instead, he headed straight for my Mom. She watched in amusement as Beaker landed on top of her sandwich. There she sat, plate in hand, and sandwich on plate, bird on sandwich. Beaker immediately began pecking at the bread. He seemed to be enjoying himself. Pixie, who was the closest to him (they were cagemates) followed him over. She flew down towards my Mom, who said she felt like air traffic control at this point. She landed on the sandwich, too. Now, Pixie was my little fightcat, and was often intimidating to Beaker. So, she picked a fight with him. I watched as the two stood on top of my mom's delicious turkey sandwich, and fought. They pecked back and forth, Pixie always having the upper hand. This fight was rather short-lived (as they usually were), and she started eating, too. They walked around, pecking the bread, Beaker sticking his head over the side to eat the lettuce. Sam was over perching yet, but as soon as he saw what was going on, he decided to get in on the action. I always suspected he had vision problems, so he landed on the back of the chair. He did work his way down to my mother, though, crawling down her arm to the sandwich. So, there were my Three Musketeers, enjoying THEIR Thanksgiving night snack. After a while, Beaker was finished. He left, and so did Pixie and Sam. My Mom had to go and make herself another sandwich, since the bread was so eaten up! And they flew around for the next hour or so, coming down and sitting on our shoulders before they retired to their cage for the evening. The moral of the story: perhaps you should re-consider inviting your budgies to Thanksgiving dinner. Or, make them a sandwich! Happy Thanksgiving to all of our Budgie Buddies!
